For MySQL, I have hands-on interaction with the DBMS using the MySQL workbench. I explain the syntax as I go along and request the student use the SQL statements to demonstrate how to use them to retrieve data, create tables/views, filter data, create table, insert data into tables, update/delete data from tables; most of my teaching methods are highly interactive with the student and they are "hands on".
