Debra D.
Over the course of my 15 year career teaching high school math in public and independent schools, I developed a love for the sound “Oooooh!” that often precedes a wonderfully satisfying statement like, “I get it!” Through my years in the classroom and past 6 years exclusively tutoring, I have found much joy in making that kind of moment happen.

I have taught Algebra 1 to at-grade-level and remedial 9th graders. I have taught Advanced Algebra with Trigonometry to precocious 9th graders, as well as to at-grade level 10th & 11th grade students, and to struggling 11th grade students. Through working with students across this spectrum, I have gained insight into the variety of ways that students learn. The result of this experience is that my students who are willing to do the work with my guidance achieve their goals.
EDUCATION & CLASSROOM TEACHING EXPERIENCE:
I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy, with honors, from Pomona College, a top 5 liberal arts college in Claremont, CA.
I earned the equivalent of a math major from a combination of classes taken around the LA area (UCLA, Cal State LA, and LA City College) in the next 5 years, while teaching Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 at Milken Community High School in Los Angeles (an independent school).
I moved back home to Chicago to attend National-Louis University. There, I earned a 4.0/4.0 for my Master's Degree in Secondary Education Math Teaching.
After earning my MAT, I taught (philosophy for two years and) math for 10 years at Lincoln Park High School, in Chicago, before transitioning to work as a private tutor for students in non-AP math classes from grades 6 - 12.
TUTORING EXPERIENCE:
After leaving my full time teaching position at LPHS in favor of spending more time with my young family, I transitioned to working as a private tutor. In the last three years, that tutoring has switched from in-person to online. I use Zoom through my computer for my sessions, using my phone as a document camera for the whiteboards I fill throughout each session. My Zooming was so effective that my own neighbor opted to stick with Zoom once our concern for COVID waned and we had the option to meet back up in person.
Either way, I love helping students achieve those hard-fought, satisfying breakthroughs, and I have been impressed with how much can happen with a document camera & Zoom.
SUBJECTS:
While my main passions are for Algebra, Advanced Algebra with Trigonometry, and Precalculus, my teaching experience and capacity is sufficiently varied to include all non-AP math courses for students from 6 - 12th grades.
LET'S GET STARTED!
I look forward to building new student-teacher relationships and facilitating remarks like, “Oh!! That makes sense!”
Here are the hours when the tutor has the opportunity to work with new students. The information about the available time slots may change every hour in real time. That is why you have to discuss the exact time with a tutor
