In my opinion, to teach someone about an instrument, first you should teach them about the theory behind it. So my lessons will be theory-focussed at the beginning, and eventually they will be becoming more instrument-focused according to the students' acknowledgement.

My music education consist of six years of classical piano and four years of jazz guitar. The consequence of that is my open-minded view of music. I can understand that sometimes a student finds music theory boring, so if that happens I usually ask the student about music he or she likes and, from that reference point, I choose a song to analyze and to teach music theory using music that the student likes.
