I teach English as a Second Language to multiple levels of middle school students. What I have found is that no matter the age, it is imperative to teach at the level the student is needing, no matter the age. I would give a simple test to distinguish English levels (unless that is already known), and begin lessons based on that information. It's helpful to have a goal in mind coming into tutoring.
